Welcome to the website of Ralf Futselaar. I am a historian and currently live and work in Nishinomiya, Japan. I use this website to keep people informed about my teaching and research activities, as well as to keep some old work-related stuff available on line.
I was educated as an economic and social historian at the universities of Groningen, Cork and Amsterdam, and have published a book about the standard of living in Denmark and the Netherlands during the Second World War. Apart from war (and) economics, I am interested in the global history of health, the health effects of public policy and economic development, and the interaction between the life and social sciences and public policies. More recently, I have become involved in two projects investigating racism, primarily in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Chances are you find these topics fascinating, because you too get warm and pleasant feelings when you read about time series, the early history of the Black Atlantic, the health transition in modern Japan, or the role of Danish resistance veterans in shaping modern psychiatry. Perhaps you are even willing to fork out 30 euro to buy a copy of my book. If this is the case, I suggest you browse through the rest of this website.
Then again, it is far more likely that you are not interested in any of these topics. Perhaps you were looking for another Futselaar? The system administrator Hans, the politician Frank, the potter Erna, the athlete Frank, the scientist Harry, Eddy the piano guru, or Heleen the teacher? If so, sorry, but I wish you the best of luck on your quest to find their websites.
Or maybe I am the guy you were looking for, but you are interested in my private life, rather than my work. Regrettably, for you at least, I try to keep my fascinating private life private. You could, however, have a look at my blog, or try your luck and send me an email.
